A busy October for video games

In 2020, Animal Crossing New Horizons and Doom Eternal both released on the same day. These two games would also gain acclaim from fans and critics, Doom Eternal was another solid shoot-em-up game and ACNH would go on to sell over 40 million copies (especially when the COVID Pandemic had occurred that same year).

Three years later, the video game scene is experiencing another blockbuster month as new releases have been announced and set for release. Four games have been making waves online and in the general public. While we have seen these type of situations occur throughout the history of video games, it's pretty interesting that Mario, Sonic, Spiderman and Alan Wake will arrive this month. Four huge and enamoring franchises that will keep video-gamers busy throughout October. So, let's take a look at these four releases and understand the hype for them.

Sonic Superstars - Released 17th October - PC - PS5 - SWITCH - XBOX

Sonic has had a fun few years since the disappointment of Sonic Forces. IDW's comic adaptations have been solid throughout, the two movies have reintroduced the character to new audiences and Sonic Frontiers has done fairly well as a 3D Sonic game.

Some fans, on the other hand, have been asking for another 2D Sonic game. Their thoughts became a reality when the game was announced at Summer Games Fest this year.

Sonic Superstars is a collaboration between Sonic Team and Arzest. Naoto Oshima, the original artist of Sonic, returned to help with development of the game.

The game features Sonic and his pals, Amy, Knuckles and Tails on another adventure through mesmerising zones and visuals. They face Eggman again, who has Fang and a new character named Trip to help him with his new evil scheme.

For the Sonic community, many see this as a godsend as many people have been asking for another 2D sonic game since Sonic Mania from 2016. A return classic era again has proved to be another fun experience with Superstars gaining positive reviews since it released a few days ago.

Super Mario Wonder - 20th October - SWITCH

Sonic is not the only mascot to get a new game this month, Mario returns again with an experimental platformer.

The last mainline game, Super Mario Odyssey, was released six years ago and would go on to be named as one of the best Mario games along with Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario 64.

With the Mario movie doing extremely well in the box office, Nintendo has decided to capitalise on its success by releasing a new Mario game this month.

There a lot of changes, the most obvious being Mario and Luigi's new voice actor, Kevin Afghani. He takes over Charles Martinet who had voiced Mario for almost 30 years.

The other change is the designs of the characters, not anything radical but a slight difference to Mario's design since Super Mario Sunshine.

Mario Wonder is another wacky adventure where Bowser continues his shenanigans, your goal is to stop him as any character you choose to be. This time, there are new power ups; the most interesting is the elephant power up where your chosen character becomes an elephant and stomps to the end of any stage.

As this is a new 2D Mario game that is not like the 'New Super Mario Bros' series, Wonder will be another step in the right direction for Mario and millions are looking forward.

Spiderman 2 - 20th October - PS5

Insomniac's Spiderman was released 5 years ago and has been named the best Spiderman game by some critics. Miles Morales would get his own game both on the PS4 and PS5 and also attracted rave reviews.

This time, the two Spiderman come together to fight against villains such as Kraven the Hunter, The Sandman, The Lizard and Venom in a much bigger map of New York.

Outside the games, Spiderman has experienced acclaim for its movies. The Tom Holland trilogy has boosted the popularity of Spiderman and the Mile Morales movies have transformed the entire animation history as we know it (Bad Guys, Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, Nimona and the latest TMNT movie have taken notes).

Both Spiderman and Spiderman : Miles Morales have made people ask for a Spiderman game with both Spidermen together, and now their wishes have been granted. So far, the sequel is gaining rave reviews and Spiderman is set to sell millions as Insomniac and Marvel's partnership continues to thrive.

Alan Wake 2 - 27th October - PC - PS5 - XBOX

From the creators of Max Payne, Alan Wake was introduced in 2010. It's about a novelist who finds himself in a mystery of his wife's appearance in Bright Falls, Washington. Twists and cliffhangers occur throughout.

The game did well and gained a lot of positive reviews and would be remastered in 2022.

This October, Alan Wake returns in a much anticipated sequel. This time, Alan is trapped in an alternate dimension and has to escape by writing a new story involving an FBI agent.

For those who love survival horrors and the many games from Remedy, Alan Wake 2 seems like an enthralling time.
