Overview of the UK Singles & Albums Charts - 12th January 2024

It's the second week of 2024 and we've seen a surge of hits from last year returning to the charts. This week continues that trend.

Unfortunately, before the charts were announced, DJ Anne Nightingale sadly passed away. She was the first female radio DJ for BBC Radio 1 and continued hosting for the station until her death.

Fortunately, the singles and album charts refresh this Friday and surely some surprises will come around. Anything could happen.

SINGLES

At 40 is a new entry from Nick Minaj with "FTCU" , the fifth single with the usual Minaj style from her album 'Pink Friday 2'.

Going up the charts, 39 is "Toxic". No it's not by Britney Spears but a rapper from Wokingham named Songer. It was originally a freestyle uploaded to GRM Daily's YouTube channel.

Honestly, it's a mash-up done well, especially with the recent announcement of Britney's break from the music industry.

Lewis Capaldi returns at 37 with "Strangers", another piano-led single from his 2nd album 'Broken Desire...'.

Up to 34 is the return of Eliza Rose ('B.O.T.A.' was a #1 hit in 2022). This time, she calls Calvin Harris for help with her new single "Body Moving".

The song calls back to early 2000s house music and features a horn section too.

Minaj continues her chart domination with two singles occupying 33 & 32. The song at 32 is named "Pink Friday Girls and samples Cindy Lauper's "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun".

At 27, one of Drake's old tracks "Practice" enters the Singles charts for the first time since it was featured on his album 'Take Care' in 2011.

Mason & Princess Superstar's "Perfect (Exceeder)" rises to 26. This is thanks to Amazon's 'Saltburn', still shocking viewers to this day.

The biggest surprise of the week is "Unwritten" by Natasha Bedingfield! But why is it at 24 in the charts?!

"Unwritten" was recently featured in the movie 'Anyone But You', featuring Syndey Sweeney and Glenn Powell.

And also, it's a catchy song; so no wonder it's back after it was originally released in November 2004.

At 21, Bring Me The Horizon return to the charts with "Kool Aid". Their highest charting hit since "Drown" peaked at #17 in the Singles Charts back in December 2014.

As rumours of a relationship between Barry Keoghan and Sabrina Carpenter have been circulating, the latter's single "Feather" is at 19.

Liam Gallagher & John Squire's partnership has worked well. "Just Another Rainbow" is Liam's highest charting Solo single at 16.

It's a song that calls back to the 'Madchester' era from the early 90s that saw bands such as Happy Mondays, Stone Roses (John Squire's former band), 808 State and Inspiral Carpets dominate the UK.

David Guetta returns to his 'Nothing To The Beat' era with help from Zara Larsson. "On My Love" sticks around for a 2nd week at #15.

Number 12 is another collaboration. This time it's Fred Again and Baby Keem with "Leavemealone". It's a beautiful minimal drum and bass tune that will surely be played in nightclubs for the next few weeks.

Now into the top 10. "DNA (Loving You)" secures another week in the top 10. It's a song that has helped revive Trance back into the mainstream, along with Calvin Harris and Casso.

Going up the top 10, Teddy Swim's debut "Lose Control" rises eight places from 14 to 6. That's what happens when you upload covers of songs on your personal YouTube channel.

And at number 2, the Saltburn reaches a maximum high. "Murder On The Dancefloor" secures Sophie Ellis Bextor's second stint at number 2. The track peaked at the same position back in 2001.

This means that Noah Kahan's "Stick Season" remains at number 1 for a second week. The past few months have been huge for the guitarist from Vermont, USA.

ALBUMS

Since they formed in 1990, Shed Seven haven't had a number 1 album until now. Their 6th album, 'A Matter Of Time' finally gives the York-based band their first album to hit the top spot.

Their highest album before was 'Going For Gold - The Greatest Hits', which peaked at #7 in 1999.

Elsewhere in the Album Charts, Teddy Swims' 'I've Tried Everything But Therapy - PT 1' earns him his first top 40 album in the UK.

At 20, it's a debut for Dublin based garage-punk band Sprints with their album "Letter To Self".

They are signed to German label City Slang, which has released material from The Flaming Lips, Lemonheads and Hole.

And finally, Noah Kahan's 'Stick Season' climbs one place to number 4, continuing to win fans by himself and his guitar.

EPILOGUE

Next week will be an interesting one. Both Ariana Grande and Lil Nas X have released new singles on the same day.

Ariana returns with "Yes, And?", her first single since 2020 and her first for her new album (yet to be titled). This year, she'll play Glinda in the movie adaptation of 'Wicked'.

Lil Nas X continues to innovate with the single 'J Christ', along with a music video that references Christianity and is sure to anger some hard-core Christians. However, the song is another bop and Lil Nas X is pleased to be around.

Only time will tell who will make it to the top of the charts next Friday.
